Washington Business Journal 2023

Apr 28, 2023

The Washington Business Journal named the WMATA Headquarters, a Finalist for the Best Sustainable Development. The 230,000-square-foot building was designed to help the public agency reduce its overall office footprint while also providing additional revenue streams with retail and leasing opportunities.

The new headquarters aligns with the agency’s commitment to sustainability and is expected to achieve LEED Platinum certification through the U.S. Green Building Council. The citation notes that the structure, through its design, achieved the energy and carbon reduction equivalent of 534 fewer cars on the road for a year.

Other sustainable features include a green roof, water bottle filling stations, touchless bathroom fixtures that save water and reduce the spread of germs, and a robust recycling program. Employees also benefit from wellness amenities like a fitness center, a pedestrian-friendly location with easy access to outdoor spaces, and natural light.
