Mundo Verde Bilingual Public Charter School

Washington, DC

Client: Studio Twenty Seven Architecture

Building Size: 55,000 sf

Project Cost: $13.2 million

Certifications: LEED Gold / Seeking LEED Platinum

Combining the extensive renovation of the historic John F. Cook Elementary School with the addition of a 10,000 sf annex building, Mundo Verde Bilingual has now opened as the District of Columbia’s first “green” charter school. From a curriculum imbued with environmental consciousness to the building’s energy efficient infrastructure, Mundo Verde exudes passion and dedication to sustainability that is unmatched by any school in the DC community.

The three-story building features new windows, roofing, systems, utility services, and landscaping features. Much of the floor plans remained intact, minimizing the new construction required to house Mundo Verde’s elementary school. The school provides twenty classrooms that aim to adequately accommodate the educational needs of a growing community. The original central auditorium was also restored, and serves as the cafeteria, as well as much-needed space for school gatherings. In addition, the school transformed the exterior asphalt areas into a playground, creating a schoolyard habitat including indigenous planting and a rainwater recovery and monitoring station. The school features nine new kindergarten and pre-k classrooms, and officially opened for the 2014/2015 school year.
